The Village Green, Take 2

The Village Green
7508 Hubbard Avenue, Middleton
Date of Curd Tasting: 05NOV2014

To set the scene: Word around our home town, the Good Neighbor City of Middleton, was that the Village Green had upgraded their curds. We had refused to partake again after a previous mediocre review [our second review ever] way back in AUG2010, but were willing to see if the rumors were true. XTC and HappySchnapps are often drawn to the Village Green on Wednesdays thanks to their French Dip special, with optional Giardiniera which turns it into an Italian Beef, so it was a good reason to head “downtown” for a Take 2 review.

We asked the waitress if she knew if the curds came from a local dairy. The answer: “I don’t think so”. No offer to go find out. Next piece of bad news: Out of French Dip.

Village Green Curds

Village Green Curds

Taste…4
These curds have a vastly improved flavor compared to their predecessor. Very salty, and strangely chewy. XTC was convinced that they were actually sticks of string cheese that were cut up. Some “curds” were abnormally long.

Inner Curd

Inner Curd

Color…white
As per menu description.

Greaziness….4.5
Not too greazy, yet still arrived with a lovely sheen upon them. Slight puddle remaining in the boat, post-curds.

Chz Bleed

Chz Bleed

Batter…3.5
Rather corn mealy, rather than beer battery. Some instances of chz bleed. A bit thicker than is optimal for a quality curd.

Condiment…ranch
It was called ranch, but was more reminiscent of creamy Italian. More tangy than your standard ranch.

Value…3.5
Price was $5.99, which is a price hike of $1.24 from the previous curds on the menu. This is your basic dive bar, with a rather small order served in the standard paper boat.

Total Score…15.5
Definitely a GIANT improvement on the curd quality, so BRAVO Village Green!! We used to call them out as one of the “worst curds” in the Madison area when friends and acquaintances would inquire, but no more! They definitely qualify for the Curdz that go YUM category, albeit at the low end. We wouldn’t run down to VG just for the curdz as they are rather forgettable, and nothing special, but if we find ourselves there on a Wednesday for the French Dip, we’d definitely partake in another order!
